Outrage as Abducted NYSC Member Dies in Captivity Despite N10m Ransom

 

A member of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who was abducted by suspected bandits and later seen in a disturbing viral video being beaten has reportedly died while in captivity, despite the payment of a ₦10 million ransom.

According to reports circulating online, the young corps member was kidnapped by armed bandits while serving his mandatory national assignment. A video that surfaced on social media showed the victim pleading for mercy while being assaulted by his captors, sparking widespread concern and calls for urgent intervention by security agencies.

Sources claim that the victim’s family and associates managed to raise about ₦10 million in ransom in an effort to secure his release. However, despite the payment, the abducted corps member reportedly lost his life before regaining freedom.

The tragic development has generated public outrage, with many Nigerians questioning the country’s security architecture and the level of protection available to young graduates posted for national service under the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Critics argue that because the NYSC programme is compulsory for many graduates, the government has a responsibility to ensure the safety of participants deployed across the country, including in regions affected by banditry and insecurity.
