In a major escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on social media that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed during coordinated U.S.–Israeli military strikes on Iranian targets. Mr. Trump described the death as “justice” for victims of Iran’s actions and said it presents an opportunity for political change within the country.
The operation, reportedly launched early Saturday under the name “Operation Epic Fury,” involved extensive aerial and missile strikes aimed at dismantling key elements of Iran’s military, command infrastructure, and leadership structures. According to Israeli and U.S. statements, several senior Iranian officials were killed alongside Khamenei. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are “growing signs” that Khamenei’s compound was successfully targeted.
