France Ready to Support Gulf States and Jordan Amid Broader Middle East Conflict

Paris, March 2, 2026 — France has publicly signalled its willingness to support Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan in the face of escalating hostilities across the Middle East, as regional tensions intensify following unprecedented military actions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot affirmed on Monday that Paris stands in full solidarity with Gulf nations and Jordan, which have been hit by missile and drone strikes attributed to Iran’s retaliation against recent U.S. and Israeli offensive operations. The support, Barrot said, would be provided upon request and according to international law, particularly principles of collective self-defense. 

The statements follow a rare crisis meeting in Paris with senior officials from key European partners, where France highlighted the security challenges now confronting its allies in the Persian Gulf. Barrot condemned the Iranian strikes as “massive and unjustified,” saying that several Gulf states and Jordan were drawn into a conflict they “did not choose.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has also pushed for urgent diplomatic engagement at the United Nations. He called for a U.N. Security Council meeting to address the rapidly deteriorating situation, framing the conflict as a serious threat to global peace and urging all parties to pursue de-escalation through international mechani

Regional Escalation and French Defensive Posture says 

The current flare-up began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran, which targeted high-level military and strategic sites. In response, Iran launched a series of missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region — hitting bases and infrastructure in several Gulf states and fostering widespread concern over an expansion of the conflict.

In reaction to this spill-over, France, along with Germany and the United Kingdom, expressed readiness to take defensive measures if required. This includes potential military cooperation to protect shared interests and the security of allied forces and civilians in the region.

Additionally, Paris is boosting its military readiness by reinforcing deployments in the region. French naval and air assets are being repositioned to protect strategic maritime routes and bolster deterrence measures. There have also been preparations to assist with the evacuation of French nationals should the security situation necessitate it.
